Preventing Losses To UPC Barcode Fraud

UPC Barcodes Can Be Faked
The idea of generating fake barcodes in order to pay less at retail checkout for products has likely been in existence as early as 1974, when the first UPC barcode scanner was used to check out a pack of Wrigley's Gum in a supermarket in Ohio. The barcoding industry has come a long way since then, but often times, the fundamentals behind cheating the system remain very simple.

In most cases, knowing the special UPC Code that is registered for a particular product is enough to modify to a lower cost, or increase the quantity of an item. A relatively affordable barcode generator application can generate sheets and sheets of barcode labels, legitimate or fake. This can translate to huge losses for retail businesses in every part of the marketplace, and so it pays to know how you can minimize instances of UPC barcode fraud. Following are some useful and easy-to-follow tips:

  • In a retail establishment, a UPC barcode fraudster will have many of the same mannerisms and habits that a regular shoplifter would. A close eye may reveal fidgeting or actions that are obstructed from cameras, or even the fake UPC labels themselves. Applying a fraudulent UPC barcode label over an existing label can happen very fast and an observer can miss it, but knowing what to look for can help a lot.
  • UPC Barcodes may be printed on labels with a special water mark or some other anti-counterfeit material. Even if the barcode itself is successfully faked, the difference in label may be as easy to identify for a trained professional as a fake ID card.
  • Migrate from UPC Barcoding to RFID technology can be expensive but is much more difficult to defraud. Tauted as the automation solution to logistics, retail and more, RFID has had a harder time getting off the ground than originally thought due to very costly implementations of an emerging technology that has yet to fully emerge.
In the future, advances in barcode technology, barcode scanning and the competitive RFID industry may push the barcode industry to allow special encoding of UPC codes that can make it more difficult to successfully create a fake UPC barcode that can actually be used to effectively steal a product. For now, the weight of responsibility rests on those store managers, security workers and other store professionals who must always be wary of the fraudsters and thieves whose livelihood relies on their ability to cheat the system.

It’s actually scary to think that Generation Y, also known as the Millennial  Generation, are use to being engaged with technology for about eight hours a day. Yep, you read that right – eight hours. Between texting, social media, computers, phones, i-Pads and TV, Generation Y makes it tough to communicate with in terms of sales. Their attention span is minimal, and many are known to be very impatient when being waited on or helped. In fact, most studies tell us they expect – not just want – but expect immediate satisfaction. As an independent retailer, that’s a lot to respond to.

Born between the late 1970′s and into the early 1990′s, Generation Y are making up a large audience of potential customers. While it may seem obvious to market to them online and via technology driven avenues, it’s also important to provide traditional marketing and sales options. The key is communicating with them in a way they respond to.

For starters, Generation Y consumers typically love a good “cause”. Whether you give a percentage of sales to a local charity or provide attention to a great cause, this group of consumers want to hear about what’s going on in the world. Sure, they may not want to read a ten page report on something, but they care enough to contribute how they can. And this is especially true if they are shopping for one thing and can give to another all at once.

Just as much as they love a good cause, Gen Y also loves the uniqueness that everyone has. Their appreciation for being a “one and only” was built on upbringings that told them they were unique and could do anything. In response to this, you have to learn to react to customers a bit more uniquely, as well. Without truly profiling your customer, you can still learn a lot by how they are dressed, what they are doing (example: are they on the phone and shopping at once) and how they react to certain environments and shopping. Many want to be engaged, so stores without the option to touch things or experience products before purchase often miss out. Consider how your store would make a Gen Y consumer  feel. Does it speak to who they are? For that matter, do you want your store to?

Finally, don’t let time be on your side. Unlike many other consumers, Gen Y tends to be in a rush. They are constantly moving and looking forward to the next thing on their to-do-list, even if that’s tweeting or checking their Facebook status. So what does that mean for you? Don’t beat around the bush and get to the point in your sales and support. They’ll appreciate it, and so will you.

Trace files contain important information which will be helpful to troubleshoot in the event of any problems in an SAP system.

Usually trace files will be stored under Work directory.

Typical menu path for Work directory in Unix will be  /usr/sap/<System ID>/<Instance>/work

Eg: /usr/sap/DP1/P02/work

Path will be similar in other systems based on other operating systems.
In these trace files, the lines that contain error information begin with ***ERROR => .
Lines for which system log (SM21) entries are written start with ***LOG<message id>.

A separate trace file will be written for each component of SAP.

Please find below list of various components and the respective trace file that will be present under the work directory. Based on the component to which the issue is related, respective trace file can be referred to troubleshoot the issue.














Based on the component with which issue is related, respective trace file need to be investigated.

 For example:

i)     If issue is related to communication problems, files related to message server, gateway, appc-server, RFC etc needs to be referred.
ii)            If issue is related to transports, dev_tp file need to be investigated.
iii)           If issue is related to locking, dev_eq<n> file need to be investigated
iv)      If issue is related to printing or spool , then corresponding spool trace need to be investigated

How to change the developer trace level in SAP?
This article answers the following queries :

Trace files and their significance:
Trace files contain important technical information which will be required by basis consultant to troubleshoot  in event of problems / issues with the SAP system.
Different levels of traces:
There are 4 trace levels in SAP.
Level 0  - No trace
Level 1 – Write error messages in the trace file
Level 2 – Full trace ; The trace entries are being written will vary with the SAP program that is being traced
Level 3 – It is similar to Level 2 but in addition to that it also traces data blocks
SAP profile parameter rdisp/TRACE is used to set the developer trace level in SAP.
Trace level 1 is the “default” trace level set in an SAP system.
Sometimes there may be a requirement to developers or even basis guys to increase trace level from the default value 1 so that much detailed trace can be captured which helps in resolution of an issue.
To change this parameter, goto RZ11 transaction and provide rdisp/TRACE as shown below:

As seen from the above screen, this is a “dynamically switchable” parameter which means that trace level can be changed immediately and it doesn’t need restart of an SAP system for the parameter value to take effect.

If your SAP system contains more application servers, please tick “Same on all servers” checkbox in the above screen so that trace level can be changed dynamically across all the application servers. If you would like to change in a particular application server, it is not required to tick this check box.

In the above screen, default value , profile value and current value are set to 1. In case, it is required to set trace level for temporary period(till restart of the application server), it can be set by modifying current value accordingly. Please note that after restart of the server, the current value will be lost and system will start using the profile parameter that is set for that instance.

To set this parameter value permanently, you need to set this value in RZ10 profile parameter in all the application servers that is required. Once SAP system is restarted, it will read the profile values and come up with the value that is set to this parameter.

Advantages /Disadvantages in setting high trace levels in SAP

While higher trace levels provide much more detailed trace which helps in troubleshooting the issue there are some disadvantages as well.

Trace level 2 or higher influences the system performance and should only be set for error analysis. In addition, trace files grow very rapidly  when trace is activated. We should ensure that enough space is left on the disk on which the SAP directory is located. Using parameter %rdisp/TRACE_LOGGING%, we can ensure the trace files do not grow to an arbitrary size when trace is active.

Trace logging can be activated by setting the parameter rdisp/TRACE_LOGGING to ON. Also specify the size at which once reached, the trace file is logged and the trace level is reset to 1.

Please find below values that can be set to this parameter and their significance
rdisp/TRACE_LOGGING = off :  no tracing
rdisp/TRACE_LOGGING = on, 1000 : trace is logged if the trace file contains more than 1000 bytes
rdisp/TRACE_LOGGING = on, 20k : trace is logged if the trace file contains more than 20KB
rdisp/TRACE_LOGGING = on, 30m , global =on activates trace logging, if the trace file is larger than 30mega bytes. If the pattern searched for has been found in a trace file, trace logging is deactivated on all the servers.

Parameter rdisp/TRACE_PATTERN_0 is used to specify a trace pattern for automatically switching off the SAP trace. This parameter has effect only if trace logging is activated using rdisp/TRACE_LOGGING. In this scenario, trace files are searched for the search pattern. If pattern is found, trace logging is deactivated and trace level is reset to 1.

In this way, setting these parameters avoid trace files to grow to arbitrary size and  limits the trace logging based on the size of file specified.

"Hello, World"

First of all, I love fashion and am ever impressed with the innovative world of not only fashion but retail and fashion/retail marketing. Retailing is the consumers connection to fashion, the products you choose to carry determine what society is going to look like.

Karl Lagerfeld and Anne Wintour may decide a cut is "this season" but the retail industry calls the shots when it comes to what will be generally distrubuted.

That said, much of it has to do with marketing and presentation. A good retailer will select hot items AND market them in such a way that they become a "must have item". The gold skinny belt, the little black dress, the maxi dress, the braid, these are all trends that were made popular through marketing and proper placement. An even better retailer will be able to market THEMSELVES in such a way that THEY are a must have item.

The question could be how do you do that? Is having impeccable taste the key or is there more to it?

One formula is interaction and inspiration, positioning yourself as a thought leader. Look books, inspiration boards, "look a day", "how to wear" and "how I wore" this contests are where it is at and J. Crew is not only on the boat but they are rocking the boat with their new "Hello, World" concept.

The concept: send out two top fashion photographers for an across the globe look at how people wear J. Crew pieces. "One-of-a-kind color and impeccable quality know no time zone".

My point isn't to glorify J. Crew (thought I do love me some colorful capri pants), my point is that they are being noted for their "global takeover" when frankly, their formula is something ANY retailer could do (minus maybe, hiring renowned fashion photogs). In the day and age of the internet and social media, a smart marketing doesn't need to have a several million dollar budget to "make it work".

What sets J. Crew apart from other retailers is the willingness to not only have a good product but to push the envelope, think outside the box with smart business decisions and take the cake... the very colorful and well constructed cake.

When file system is full – what need to be done?


This article answers the following queries:

Sometimes, a basis consultant will get alerts or information from customers that the file systems are full. To avoid system issues and to increase uptime of the SAP system, In those cases, we have 2 options.
i)              Delete un-necessary files in the file system
ii)            In case you found file system is defined as too small then increase the size of them.

  
In this article, am covering the option 1 mentioned above.

Let us assume that the system id(SID) of the sap system is DP1. Then the

i)              work directory in (Unix, WindowsNT operating system) is  /usr/sap/DP1/DVEBMGSnn/work     (where nn is the instance number)
ii)            data directory in (Unix, WindowsNT) is
/usr/sap/DP1/DVEBMGSnn/data    (where nn is the instance number)
iii)           Global directory (i.e. for all instances)  is
/sapmnt/DP1/global  (for UNIX )
\\<sapglobalhost>\sapmnt\DP1\sys\global  (for WindowsNT)

Please follow below steps to avoid this issue :

1)   Delete core files from work directory

Work directory in Unix often contains old core files which were generated due to previous program terminations. These core files need to be deleted  

2)   Delete old log files and spool files

Under global directory there will be many log files  which can be deleted regularly.

Those files are
Log file type                      Naming Convention

Spool requests            nnnSPOOL ( where nnn=client)
Job logs                      nnnJOBLG
Batch input logs          BI<hostname><instance-number>

Following reports can be run using SE38 or through background job for selective deletion of the files mentioned above.
 RSPO0041  - This report is used for deletion of old spool files
 RSBTCDEL –  Used for deletion of old job logs
RSBDCREO  - Report can be used for deletion of  batch input log files and reorganization.

3)   Deletion of old ABAP/4 trace files

Some trace files with the name AT<instance number>nnnn will be in the data directory. Old files of this type can be deleted. The maximum available space for all files is defined by the parameter abap/atrasizequota. Also transaction SE30 can be used to delete the files.

4)   Deletion of old archiving files

When old data is archived, some files are written to the global directory. The naming convention of those files is Rxxmmddn (xx= application, mm= month, dd=day, n=number). For example, RMM11056

If these files are already saved on tape and these data is no longer required for productive operation, then these files can be deleted from the disk

5)   Deletion of old output requests

Output requests are normally stored on the data directory. Naming convention will be like SP*. Under normal scenarios, they are deleted automatically when the output is completed. In case you see they are not getting deleted, you can delete the same

6)   Page file and Roll file

Under the data directory, normally page files and roll files are stored. Naming convention will be like PAGFILnn and ROLLFLnn. Please note that page file and roll files can only be deleted when the corresponding SAP instance is offline.

Deleting these files hardly makes any sense because these files will start growing  to the allowed maximum extent  during the R/3 system start up. However in some special scenarios (during or after client copy), the required space can be retrieved by deleting these files. As mentioned earlier, please note that this can be done only when the instance is offline.

The maximum size of the roll file is given by
(rdisp/ROLL_MAXFS – rdisp/ROLL_SHM) * 8 Kbytes

A similar formula applies to the paging file also.

In some scenarios, to avoid the file system full issue, we can even move these page and roll files to a different file system by defining alternate values for R/3 parameters DIR_ROLL and DIR_PAGING

7)   Deletion of Old sort and Extract files

By the ABAP commands SORT and EXTRACT, temporary files are created. The location of these files are set using profile parameter DIR_SORT or DIR_EXTRACT. 

The temporary files for sort are named S+++++++<Extension> (On Windows NT .dat is used as extension  and on Unix there is no extension). Similarly for Extract, E+++++++<Extension> will be the file naming convention.

These files will be automatically deleted after the execution of these SORT and EXTRACT commands. However, in some scenarios, an abrupt termination can happen and these files won’t get deleted automatically. Those old files can be deleted by an administrator.

The exact file names for these are stored in the profile parameters FN_SORT or FN_EXTRACT

8)   Deletion of trace files

Trace files are created during a new system startup and they can be deleted. They are contained in the work directory

9)   Deletion of stat file or moving to different location

Please check whether the stat file which consists the work load statistics, has not been reorganized for some time and has therefore become too large. In emergency cases, this file can be either deleted manually or can be moved to different location.

To delete the stat file manually, please proceed as follows:
Goto ST03 transaction , call the delete function on the relevant instance by choosing :
Workload -> Reorganize -> Delete seq.stat.file

To change the location of stat file, change the value of system parameter ‘stat/file’ to a new location.

10) Deletion of job logs at operating system level

In some emergency cases, where you cannot start the R/3 system at all, the measure is to delete the job logs at operating system level and run RSBTCDEL report in forced mode.

Note: How to delete job logs at operating system level will be covered in a separate article later

11) Changing the trace level
If the trace files (dev_*) in the work directory are very large(normal size 0.1 to 20Kbyte), it is likely that the trace level is set to very high value. In SAP, rdisp/TRACE parameter is used to set the trace level. Normal value for trace is 1.  

Please cross check this SAP parameter and reset to 1 if the value is maintained as 2 or higher. If this value is set to high, much more detailed trace will be collected and trace file sizes are likely to increase. Therefore recommending to decrease or set the trace level to 1.

Iam sure, if you duly follow the steps mentioned above,  file system full issues can be addressed. However, if after carrying out all the above steps there is no improvement, then please consider to increase the file system size by requesting space to the relevant team.

Apple Announced "Passbook" App

[CounterPoint Feedback] The Easiest and Quickest Implementation I Have Ever Done


My company recently made the switch to CounterPoint Enterprise SQL 8.4 and would like share my experience. We have been in business for over 50 years and have had several different POS systems and CounterPoint has been the best system by far. Implementing a new system is never easy but with the help of One Step Retail Solutions this has been the easiest and quickest implementation I have ever done.

PCI Compliance for Mobile Point of Sale

PCI Council Releases “Accepting Mobile Payments with a Smartphone or Tablet”

“We know merchants are eager to take advantage of their existing smartphones or tablets to accept payment cards,” said Bob Russo, general manager, PCI Security Standards Council. “And the Council and its stakeholders, want to help the market to do this in a secure way. We're excited about this easy-to-use reference that will help merchants understand how to use the suite of PCI Standards to enable their businesses while still keeping data security top of mind.”

With the “mobile revolution” comes a shift in retail security practices by independent retailers looking for cost effective retail technology solutions. Taunted by the allure of a “full mobile POS system” for dirt cheap, it can seem too good to be true when it comes to PCI Compliance. The PCI Security Standards Council state what many have been wondering for some time, “Mobile devices are not necessarily designed to be secure input or storage devices for cardholder data. Your mobile payment solutions thus requires additional technology, including encryption to secure cardholder data acceptance.”

At this point, the exact regulations and guidelines have yet to been fully defined by the PCI Council regarding mobile point of sale systems. So, when a prospective mobile POS provider has stated that they are PCI compliant, this does not necessarily mean that any specific actions have been taken to ensure that the specific system is secure. Factually, PCI compliance is not limited to your software capabilities and while you may be attempting to form up a small business on a dime with an iPad and a $15 a month system, you are in the hot seat if you are not only PCI compliant but truly secure.

How “hot” is the hot seat?

The reason this is of absolute importance to you as a retailer, is you could personally be held accountable for everything from full reimbursement for monies stolen, to a possible $500,000 fine for negligence should there be a data breach which traces back to one of your devices. As you can see, this is very serious business that a fly-by-night POS system should not be trusted with. In this matter, the cheapest option is not necessarily the better option and could effectively close your business.

How to protect yourself and your livelihood
Several heavily marketed and relatively new mobile POS systems are under scrutiny for PCI compliance failure (lack of data encryption is a common oversight). A  long term service provider of point of sale solutions, hardware and supporting systems (security, etc.) will know the ins and outs of how to create a safe point of sale for your retail store.  We recommend a layered approach to security. Our definition of “layered security” would include: Firewall for all internet connections, system back-ups, run regularly and security cameras installed in high theft locations in the store.  In addition to having a security suite, ensuring the mobile POS device you use has data encryption, goes a long, long way to complying with  PCI Compliant regulations.

Summary
A thorough list of best practices is expected before year end. In the mean time, a straightforward paper (link below) gives some hands on advice for merchants including:


  • Leveraging the benefits of the Council's recently published Point-to-Point Encryption (P2PE) standard and program
  • Responsibilities under PCI DSS, and how to translate to mobile payments

Be sure to choose a mobile payment acceptance solution that complements the merchant's PCI DSS responsibilities.
