Generating SCC18 Barcodes With Code 128 Fonts in Word

by Nate Schubert

SSCC18 stands for Serial Shipping Container Code and these barcode types are generally used in logistics and supply chains as part of the shipping container label. These labels are used internally to keep track of containers, and to trace the progress of container shipments.

The process of creating an SSCC18 barcode can be a bit complicated for those who are new to barcodes. IDAutomation provides an excellent SSCC-18 barcode label tutorial that can be used to generate readable SSCC18 barcodes, and our technical support staff has recently released an informative video that demonstrates how to generate this barcode type in Microsoft Word.

Please take a moment to review the video below if you have a need to generate SSCC18 barcodes, and let us know if you have any questions or comments!

3 Killer QR Code Marketing Strategies

by Nate Schubert

In recent years, QR Codes have taken the Marketing community by storm. This area-efficient 2D barcode is a juggernaut, showing no signs of slowing down as businesses across the globe scramble to incorporate the cutting-edge barcode technology.

Beginning to use QR Codes as part of a time-sensitive marketing campaign, or a long-term marketing strategy can be a daunting task. Barcode technology isn't always easy to understand, as the process of encoding a barcode with the data you want can sometimes get very complicated depending on the barcode type being used, as well as the data you intend to encode inside the barcode. IDAutomation provides a variety of different QR Code Generators that will allow you to create QR Codes in many different environments and applications, and we offer demo's for all of our products so that potential customers can test and work out their procedures with a working product before purchasing.

Following are some of the ways various industries can utilize 2D QR Code technology to increase efficiency for both business and customer.
  • Real Estate Companies can add QR Codes to home brochures for each home they have on the market. This way, would-be home buyers don't need to waste time collecting a file of flyers on each of the homes they're interested in. Instead, simply scan the QR Code sticker on the sign or near the flyer. If you encode a web address for that particular home, then the user will go to that web address on their phone as they scan the barcode. This way, they'll always have the information about that house on their phone, and can access it from anywhere.
  • Car Dealerships would also stand to gain from including QR Codes on the sale materials for their cars. For those would-be customers who are just browsing or don't want to talk to a sales person, simply scan the QR Code on the sales materials to go directly to a web address dedicated to that specific car.
  • Restaurants can take advantage of QR Codes by placing one outside their door. Scanning the QR Code would take users to their menu online so that they can share with friends or family. This is an excellent way to get the word out about your menu, and a fast and easy way for customers to access it.
Another great benefit of using QR Codes is the ability to track usage. If your website has Google Analytics, for example, you can generate your special tracking URL with their URL Builder. Encode the resulting URL into your QR Code and you'll begin receiving data on the users who scan those QR Codes, as long as the barcode itself leads to a web address.

There are an endless list of other ways to use QR Codes effectively in your marketing strategies, and they are not limited just to businesses as outlined above. What are some other ways your business has incorporated QR Codes into your marketing strategies?

Strong engineering support for reseller partners drives rapid growth of TSC Auto ID

TSC Auto ID Technology America Inc.has been in business in the Americas for the past decade. In its first year, with only a single barcode printer model to sell, the company closed the books on $140,000 in sales. Now, 10 years later, the 14-person operation sells and supports 18 barcode printer models and recently posted more than $10 million in sales in 2010.

The rapid growth of TSCAA in North America and South America during its 10-year history is the result of several key factors: the creation of a loyal group of dedicated resellers, continuous improvement in the organization’s products line, and strong engineering support of its reseller partners.

"Early in our existence we had a limited bar code printer line to offer our customers. What set us apart from other new barcode printer companies was our investment in U.S. offices and our development of a loyal group of resellers who know they can depend on TSC for technical and engineering support," said Kevin Aie, TSCAA’s chief executive officer.

"Our dealers are loyal because we treat them like the partners they are," said Aie. "We always listen to suggestions for ways to improve our hardware and firmware. And, most importantly, we have a major investment in engineering support here in the United States. So we can offer our partners much more custom support than the typical barcode printer company."

Business growing rapidly
Today, TSCAA’s headquarters in Pomona, Calif., manages accounting, inventory, technical support, and customer services for TSCAA customers throughout the Americas. And TSCAA’s Orlando, Fla. facility is home to sales and technical-support operations. With two U.S.-based operations, TSCAA is able to quickly respond to customer needs and growing market opportunities in North America, Central America and South America.

"Our business is growing rapidly as resellers, distributors and others turn to us for label printing solutions that are specifically designed for cost-effective integration into their existing businesses," said David Lundeen, TSCAA’s vice president of sales and marketing.

"We’ve concentrated on developing and delivering products and services that offer a unique mix of powerful programming tools and high reliability at very low cost. In short, we are delivering exactly what our fast-growing reseller base is asking for, and we will continue to keep up with their demands as we expand throughout the Americas."

Talented engineering team
A key member of the TSCAA team is Ken Chou, an Orlando-office project engineer in charge of engineering and support. Shortly after coming to TSC in 1991, he authored the Eltron EPL2 printer language, the world’s most popular barcode printer language. Since rejoining the company in 2002, he has been a key contributor to the rapid growth of barcode printer sales in the Americas market.

"My major focus at TSC is to improve our customer support, introduce our dealers to the many capabilities offered by TSC bar code printers and help the company continuously improve its firmware," Chou said.

Due in great part to Chou’s efforts, TSC has seen dramatic growth in recent years of its barcode printer offering and firmware capabilities. In 2006, for example, TSC released its TSPL-EZ firmware, which at the time was the most advanced firmware ever written by the company. It broke new ground for the barcode industry by packaging multi-language emulations, scalable True-Type font rendering, advanced calibration, and a powerful stand-alone programming language into a single factory-installed printer language.

Helping customers grow their business
TSC America works very closely with each of its partners to help them grow their business. Sometimes that might mean helping a partner develop SNMP capabilities that address a sales opportunity at a large-scale networked facility. Other times it might entail helping a customer convert a non-barcode data stream into a useful barcode with human readable information.

Take for example the customer-support efforts of Daniel Rodriguez, who joined TSCAA in 2010 as junior engineer, and is now deeply involved in TSCAA’s reseller support program. He often assists customers in writing stand-alone programs for TSC bar code printers, integrating TSC printers with electronic scales, and troubleshooting difficult applications. And he recently prepared a webinar that trains resellers in the how-to of developing standalone barcode printer solutions. (By the way, resellers who master the skill of value-added programming report earning higher margins on their barcode printer sales.)

Always listening to customers
TSCAA’s joint development effort with Mid America Business Systems, an identification-solutions company located in Columbus, Ohio, is merely one example of its customer-support commitment. In 2003, Mid America was searching for a barcode-printer company to help it find a way to replace the existing printers at a local hospital with new printers capable of using the hospital’s existing data stream to print 2D barcodes. A TSCAA team lead by Chou spent hundreds of hours working with Mid America to deliver updated firmware to handle the complicated task. Today, Mid America has more than 5,000 TSC bar code printers installed throughout the United States and is now expanding into Canada.

"Our willingness to listen to customer needs and develop solutions to those needs has been the cornerstone of success for TSC America," said Aie. "There are numerous situations where customers have come to us looking for creative solutions, and TSC has delivered new firmware and hardware capabilities to meet those needs."

Expanding partner support
Today, Aie, Chou and other team members are working to expand TSCAA’s pre-sales and post-sales engineering support. With more customers than ever, TSC has introduced new training and support tools to help resellers harness the power of the company’s firmware and emulation software.

"We are now using web-based tools to run product-training webinars while directly supporting our end users," Chou said. "When customers have issues, we can get online with them, take over their computer and help them set up their TSC bar code printer, which usually takes less than five minutes. We are willing to spend whatever time it takes to satisfy our customers."

TSCAA is committed to growing its support organization as it continues to add to its lineup of high-quality, high-value barcode printers.

"As the introduction of new barcode printer models drives more resellers to TSC, we are more prepared than ever to meet our responsibilities to our growing network of partners throughout the Americas, " Aie said.

Encoding Functions With 2D Barcode Fonts in Excel

by Nate Schubert

Last week we wrote about one of our newest video tutorials which demonstrates how to encode functions with Code 128 barcode fonts in Microsoft Excel. This week, we're happy to announce the release of another of our newest video tutorials which demonstrats how to encode functions with 2D barcode fonts in Microsoft Excel.

This video tutorial explains how to encode a function such as a Tab in a 2D barcode like Data Matrix, Aztec, QR Code using the appropriate 2D Barcode Font package in conjunction with the IDAutomation Excel Barcode Add-in, in Microsoft Excel. Encoding functions such as a tab in a 2D barcode can greatly increase the level of efficiency by making multi-field output possible. This is especially important when working with 2D barcodes which can encode upwards of 800 characters of information.

Please take some time to view the video below to learn how to encode functions in your 2D barcode using Microsoft Excel, and let us know via the comments beneath this article if you have any specific comments or questions, as we are happy to assist.

Encoding Functions With Code 128 Fonts in Excel

by Nate Schubert

In all realms of business, Microsoft Excel continues to be one of the most popular methods of generating Code 128 Barcodes from fonts. Many IDAutomation customers find our barcode fonts to be very compatible with Excel, and are able to generate many barcodes quickly through our fonts and Excel font encoder tools.

While Code 128 is an excellent font to use for generating both upper and lower-case letters, as well as numbers. Especially useful, however, is the fact that Code 128 is capable of encoding functions into the barcode itself. This opens up a whole new world of opportunities for encoding information in barcodes.

One of the most important functions to encode in your Code 128 barcode is the Tab function, which would essentially allow you to scan a barcode which would then parse the encoded data into multiple tabs, populating an entire row with data rather than a single cell.

The IDAutomation Technical Support staff has worked hard to produce an easy-to-understand video tutorial that demonstrates how to encode functions into Code 128 Barcode using Microsoft Excel, in just a few simple steps. Please let us know via the comments under this article if you have any specific comments or questions, as we are happy to assist!
