Create Barcodes in Microsoft Access 2003

by Nate Schubert

Creating barcodes using Microsoft Access can be a tricky process to say the least. IDAutomation provides a set of very helpful barcode font tools that are free to use with the purchase of any IDAutomation barcode font package, but the process of creating a barcode using these free font tools can still be difficult for many to understand.

Fortunately, the IDAutomation technical support staff has come together to create a short, simple and very easy-to-understand step by step video tutorial that explains exactly how to create a barcode in Microsoft Access 2003 using IDAutomation barcode fonts and free font tools.

To learn how to generate barcodes in other Microsoft Office applications in addition to Access, check out the IDAutomation Barcode Macros & VBA Functions web page for a great text-based tutorial or bookmark the video below!

LOGMARS Barcode Creation & Printing

by Nate Schubert

LOGMARS is a specification used by the United States Government for shipment of military items within the Federal Government. Created from a Code 39 Barcode, LOGMARS is defined by Military Standard MIL-STD-129N which contains information about the location of the barcode and label in addition to what information should actually be encoded into the LOGMARS barcode to fit those military specifications.

There's a lot of information out there pertaining to LOGMARS, but not a great deal that actually explains how to create a LOGMARS barcode. The IDAutomation LOGMARS Barcode Creation & Printing tutorial focuses solely on creating the LOGMARS barcode from Code 39 using the IDAutomation Barcode Image Generator software, a stand alone application that takes a lot of the guess work out of encoding and creating accurate barcodes.

Barcode Creation for SICI & SISAC

by Nate Schubert

Everyone is pretty familiar with the ISBN number which is used to automate ordering and inventory systems for book publishers, distributors and retailers. ISBN barcodes are on virtually every publication and are the primary method for monitoring the sales of specific publications throughout the publishing industry. Another related code is the SICI, used to identify specific articles or journals in serial publications like magazines, newsletters and things of that nature.

When the SICI code is encoded into the Code 128 symbology, it becomes the SISAC barcode, which stands for Serials Industry Systems Advisory Committee. Creating the SICI code and then creating the SISAC barcode using Code 128 can be a pretty complicated process and there isn't much information about how to properly create a SISAC barcode. That's why IDAutomation is pleased to share our new SICI & SISAC Barcode Tutorial.

Using the IDAutomation Barcode Image Generator, this tutorial shows you how to create the sometimes complicated SICI code, how to purchase the correct barcode creation tool so that you can generate the SISAC barcode, how to generate the SISAC barcode and, of course, how to test it for accuracy.

If you're having problems getting your SISAC barcode in order, don't hesitate to check out this helpful tutorial. Be sure to bookmark it for easy access in the future!

How to Encode Barcode Data using the Online Encoder

by Nate Schubert

IDAutomation provides a range of font tools which are free to use with the purchase of IDAutomation products and while these font tools are very useful for encoding data that can then be turned into a barcode, there are some scenario's where the font tools are not desired. For these particular cases, we have made available an Online Barcode Font Encoder that will take your data and encode it for a given barcode type such as Code 128, Code 39, Interleaved 2 of 5, UPC, Postnet and more.

For a step-by-step example of how to use the free Online Barcode Font Encoder in conjunction with IDAutomation Barcode Fonts, watch the video below. Don't hesitate to add a comment if you have any questions or concerns and we'll address them as quickly as possible.

Many scanners on the market do not fully support GS1-DataBar and PDF417, as this IDAutomation USB Barcode Scanner does. This durable and ergonomically designed USB barcode scanner is the best value handheld in its class. It offers the performance of a laser scanner with no moving parts to wear out at a lower cost. The CCD scan engine can read smaller barcodes better than many lasers scanners and still read large barcodes. It scans linear bar codes that are up to 4.2" wide from near contact to about 10" away at 200 scans per second.

UID Barcode Marking Label Creation Tutorial

by Nate Schubert

UID Marking Labels are becoming more and more common since the Department of Defense first implemented the Item Unique Identification Program (IUID), intended to increase efficiency in asset management between organizations, even between nations and throughout the world. UID Markings are intended affix to an item or directly on an item and should last the life time of the item itself. UID has become a mandatory requirement for the DoD and is seeing more and more inclusion into normal asset management within the DoD.

Creating UID Marking Labels should be accomplished by confirming to the MIL-STD-130 specification, and several types of labels may be created from that. The process for creating UID Marking labels can be very complicated and there isn't a lot of easy-to-understand information currently available about how to actually create the labels.

Fortunately, IDAutomation has recently released a new UID Barcode Marking Labels Tutorial that shows users of IDAutomation's Barcode Label Software Pro or the Data Matrix Font Package how to create UID Marking Labels to conform to the MIL-STD-130 specification in a step-by-step format that is easy to follow. Bookmark the tutorial for fast access to this unique and vital resource!

Java Barcode Component: New Version

by Nate Schubert

IDAutomation is proud to announce the latest release of the IDAutomation Java Barcode component for both Linear and 2-dimensional packages. If you have not already tried barcoding in Java with IDAutomation products, now is a great time to download a Java component demo to generate barcodes on any operating system with a Java Virtual Machine.

While IDAutomation's java barcode components have supported many of the most popular barcode symbologies over the years including Code 39, Code 128, Data Matrix, UPC, EAN, USPS barcodes including Intelligent Mail and more, the 2D version now supports QR Code as well as a completely new DataBar component and will enable Java developers to create DataBar compliant barcode images within their java application, applet, servlet, bean box and more.

The Linear version of the Java barcode component has some added features of it's own with improved FNC1 functionality that will allow the parentheses in the DataToEncode variable to be encoded as FNC1 characters when the apply tilde is set to true as well as the ability to manually select the code 128 start character in auto mode. By including the start character as the first digit in DataToEncode, users can now specify which character set to start in. For example, DataToEncode = IABCD will encode the data in set B. The apply tilde functionality can also be used to achieve the same result; DataToEncode = ~204ABCD.

If you have a need to create barcodes using Java, then download the Demo version of the Linear, 2D or GS1 DataBar java component and try it out or just visit the website to complete your Java Barcode component purchase.

Barcode Generator for SQL Reporting Service

To generate bar codes (ALL barcodes - meaning linear barcodes, 2D barcodes like DataMatrix and GS1 DataBar codes) all you need is an internet connection. Advantage: no additional software is needed and no Visual Studio is required. The basic idea is to insert an barcode image generated by the online barcode generator of TEC-IT. This barcode generator is customizable via the URL - so it is possible to create each bar-code as required.

1) Create the required barcode using the online barcode generator
2) Scroll down to the section "Free Use of This Barcode Generator". Copy the URL (see screenshot below) into your clipboard:

Barcodegenerator

3) Start the MS SQL Server Report Builder
4) Create a new report
5) Insert a Picture object and change the “Image Source” property to “External” (see screenshot below)

ImageProperties
6) Click on the “fx” button to set the URL for the barcode image (see screenshot below)

ImageURLFunction
Function used in the example above:
=”http://www.tec-it.com/online-demos/tbarcode/barcode.aspx?code=Code128&data=” & CStr(Fields!UserName.Value) & "&dpi=96&rotation=0&modulewidth=fit"

This creates an Code128 barcode using our online barcode generator. The data encoded in the barcode is stored in the UserName field:
CStr(Fields!UserName.Value)

7) Close all dialogs with OK

That’s all you need to do to insert barcode functionality to the Microsoft SQL Reporting Service.

QRCode Mobile Marketing in Austria

In Japan more or less every square-millimeter of space is covered with QR-Codes. Japanese companies are using the 2D codes for marketing purposes as well as for really useful applications (e.g. public transport schedules with ticketing possibilities).

In Austria this technology is arriving very tentatively. The printed version of an Austrian newspaper (www.derstandard.at) is publishing ads of an European car manufacturer (I think it is Renault or Peugeot). These ads contain a 2D code. When scanned with a mobile you will be forwarded to some stylish web-page. Maybe I am able to upload a picture in the near future.

Another example of "trying" out this technology is Austrian Airlines (now part of Lufthansa). They are giving away stickers (see picture) with some slogan and a QR-code. When decoding them you will be forwarded to the booking page.

I assume that this specific marketing campaign is just a test-run. The slogans are not bad, but they do not provide enough information what to expect. So I am wondering how many people are scanning these stickers. Austrian Airlines should think about a small hint (or better: a fare reduction) to attract more users of this technology.

ScanSource Partner Conference: Day 1

by Nate Schubert

The annual ScanSource POS & Barcoding Partner Conference took over the Westin Resort in Savannah, GA once more on Monday, September 13, and Vertical Systems Reseller (VSR) was there to mark the events for those of us who, sadly, were unable to attend. Thanks for keeping us in the loop, guys!

The first day focused much on services & social media, growing trends in the industry. Our own Roxanne McSheehy, Director of Sales & Marketing, spoke with VSR about the success we've found on the social media scene using outlets like Twitter, Facebook & LinkedIn to reach out and connect with people looking for assistance with their automatic identification needs.

Tuesday is going to be focused on education as well as some on-the-floor exhibit touring where ScanSource vendors will have the opportunity to peddle their latest products and services. We can't wait to see what they've got in store for the automatic identification industry in 2010. Keep up the good work and great service!

ISSN Barcodes for Serial Publications

by Nate Schubert

Little noticed but extremely important in terms of organization of incremented publications around the world is the ISSN, or International Standard Serial Number. You know, that barcode usually on the upper right corner of serial publications such as magazines or newspapers. But what do you really know about the ISSN?

Does My Publication Need an ISSN?

ISSN numbers are specifically for serial publications like magazines, newspapers, newsletters, yearbooks, online journals and anything else that is published incrementally with a specific number of parts. Websites and blogs generally do not qualify for an ISSN.

How Much Does an ISSN Cost?

Unlike ISBN numbers which have a fee associated with them, ISSN numbers are completely free. Simply apply for an ISSN from your national center or the international location if your country does not have a national office.

How Do I Create an ISSN Barcode?

ISSN number data should be encoded in an EAN13 barcode. It's important to note that when encoding ISSN into EAN13, the final digit of the ISSN is discarded and should be replaced by the EAN13 mod10 check digit which can be calculated manually, via the online barcode font encoder, or by using a stand-alone application such as the IDAutomation Barcode Image Generator.

It's not very tricky to create an ISSN barcode and can provide a great means of keeping track of your serial publications. If you're not using the ISSN to keep track of your serial publications, don't waste another minute. It's free, it's easy and it's important.

New Release: GS1 DataBar ASP Barcode Component for IIS

by Nate Schubert

IDAutomation.com, Inc. announces the release of their GS1 Databar ASP Barcode Component for IIS.

(Tampa, FL.) IDAutomation.com, Inc. announces the release of their GS1 Databar ASP Barcode Component for IIS, which easily adds GS1 Databar barcode generation capability to webpages hosted on Microsoft IIS (Internet Information Server) through ASP (Active Server Pages). This server-side component creates GIF or JPG images in any application that can display a dynamic URL and is compatible with all web browsers. No temporary files are created on the server because the resulting barcode image is sent directly to the browser as a base-256 binary stream, which results in faster and efficient performance.

Copying just three files to the virtual directory where barcodes are required completes easy installation of the GS1 Databar ASP Barcode Component for IIS. This is a 100% managed code product created in Visual C# .NET with strong name signatures and signed DLLs. Several DataBar barcode types are supported in a single control and meet ITS (International Technical Standard) GS1 DataBar Specification including DataBar Omnidirectional, DataBar Truncated, Stacked, Stacked Omnidirectional, Limited, Expanded, Expanded Stacked, Composite, PDF417, MicroPDF417, UPC/EAN, GS1-128 and Code 128. The 2D version includes linear symbologies plus Aztec, PDF417, Data Matrix ECC200, QR-Code and Maxicode. The Barcode Server Component has the ability to set several properties with parameters in the URL such as the symbology type, orientation, color, barcode height and X dimension.

A fully functional evaluation copy may be downloaded from their website at http://idautomation.com/aspbarcode/. A single server license costs $399 USD and royalty free developer licenses start at $1590 USD. IDAutomation provides barcode fonts, components and software applications that support several barcode types. IDAutomation.com, Inc. has been marketing products for businesses since 1996 and is privately held. For more information, visit their website at http://www.idautomation.com/.
